Why UK Businesses Need a Zero Trust Security Strategy in 2026

The traditional perimeter-based security model is dead. Here's how Zero Trust, and Microsoft's implementation of it, can protect your organisation from modern threats.

The old security model assumed that everything inside your network was safe. Employees worked from the office, data lived on local servers, and a firewall was enough to keep threats out. That model is no longer fit for purpose.

Today, your team works from home, coffee shops, and client sites. Your data lives in Microsoft 365, Azure, and a dozen SaaS tools. The perimeter has dissolved, and attackers know it. In 2024, over 80% of successful breaches involved compromised credentials or identity-based attacks, not brute-force network intrusions.

Zero Trust operates on a simple principle: never trust, always verify. Instead of assuming a user is safe because they are inside the network, every access request is validated against identity, device health, location, and behaviour, every single time.

Microsoft has built Zero Trust into the fabric of its cloud platform. Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) handles identity and conditional access. Microsoft Intune enforces device compliance. Microsoft Defender monitors endpoints and cloud workloads. Together, they give you a comprehensive Zero Trust architecture without needing to bolt on third-party tools.

For UK businesses, implementing Zero Trust is no longer optional. The NCSC's Cyber Essentials Plus scheme requires multi-factor authentication and device management, both core components of a Zero Trust approach. Cyber insurance providers are increasingly requiring demonstrable access controls before they will issue a policy.

Getting started does not require a complete overhaul overnight. The most impactful first steps are enabling MFA for all users, deploying Conditional Access policies, enrolling devices in Intune, and reviewing who has access to what. Cloud Centrify can assess your current posture and build a prioritised roadmap to Zero Trust, at a pace that works for your business.
